![]() ![]() Patanjali's Yoga Sutras may be a synthesis of these three traditions. There are numerous parallels in the ancient Samkhya, Yoga and Abhidharma schools of thought, particularly from the 2nd century BCE to the 1st century AD, notes Larson. The "eight limb yoga" is described in chapter 2 sutras 28–55, and chapter 3 sutras 3 and 54. The kriya yoga part is contained in chapter 1, chapter 2 sutras 1–27, chapter 3 except sutra 54, and chapter 4. According to Feuerstein, the Yoga Sutras are a condensation of two different traditions, namely "eight limb yoga" (aṣṭāṅga yoga) and action yoga ( Kriya yoga). The levels of samādhi taught in the text resemble the Buddhist jhanas. The Yoga Sutras are a composite of various traditions. She stated the text may have been composed at an earlier date given conflicting theories on how to date it, but latter dates are more commonly accepted by scholars. Michele Desmarais summarized a wide variety of dates assigned to Yogasutra, ranging from 500 BCE to 3rd century CE, noting that there is a paucity of evidence for any certainty. ![]() He observed that "Most scholars date the text shortly after the turn of the Common Era (circa first to second century), but that it has been placed as early as several centuries before that." Bryant concluded that "A number of scholars have dated the Yoga Sūtras as late as the fourth or fifth century CE, but these arguments have all been challenged. Įdwin Bryant, on the other hand, surveyed the major commentators in his translation of the Yoga Sūtras. This dating for the Pātañjalayogaśāstra was proposed as early as 1914 by Woods and has been accepted widely by academic scholars of the history of Indian philosophical thought. Maas assessed Patañjali's Pātañjalayogaśāstra's date to be about 400 CE, based on synchronisms between its arguments and those of Vasubandhu, on tracing the history of the commentaries on it published in the first millennium CE, on the opinions of earlier Sanskrit commentators, on the testimony of manuscript colophons and on a review of extant literature. Before the time of Bhoja (11th century), no known text conflates the identity of the two authors. Although some scholars argue that this is the same Patanjali who authored the Yoga Sutras, the two works are completely different in subject matter, and Indologist Louis Renou has shown that there are significant differences in language, grammar and vocabulary. The identity of Patañjali has been the subject of academic debate because an author of the same name is credited with the authorship of the classic text on Sanskrit grammar named Mahābhāṣya that is firmly datable to the second century BC. The colophons of manuscripts of the Yoga Sutras attribute the work to Patanjali. It gained prominence as a classic in the 20th century. However, the appropriation – and misappropriation – of the Yoga Sutras and its influence on later systematizations of yoga has been questioned by David Gordon White, who argues that the text fell into relative obscurity for nearly 700 years from the 12th to 19th century, and made a comeback in the late 19th century due to the efforts of Swami Vivekananda, the Theosophical Society and others. The contemporary Yoga tradition holds the Yoga Sutras of Patañjali to be one of the foundational texts of classical Yoga philosophy. Samkhya, Yoga and Vedanta, as well as Jainism and Buddhism, can be seen as representing different manifestations of a broad stream of ascetic traditions in ancient India, in contrast to the Bhakti traditions and Vedic ritualism which were prevalent at the time. It is closely related to Buddhism, incorporating some of its terminology. The Yoga Sutras built on Samkhya notions of purusha and prakriti, and is often seen as complementary to it. The main aim of practice is kaivalya, discernment of purusha, the witness-consciousness, as distinct from prakriti, the cognitive apparatus, and disentanglement of purusha from prakriti's muddled defilements. The eight elements are yama (abstinences), niyama (observances), asana (yoga posture), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), dharana (concentration of the mind), dhyana (meditation) and samadhi (absorption). The Yoga Sutras is best known for its reference to ashtanga, eight elements of practice culminating in samadhi. The Yoga Sutras was compiled in the early centuries CE, by the sage Patanjali in India who synthesized and organized knowledge about yoga from much older traditions. The Yoga Sutras of Patañjali is a collection of Sanskrit sutras ( aphorisms) on the theory and practice of yoga – 195 sutras (according to Vyāsa and Krishnamacharya) and 196 sutras (according to others, including BKS Iyengar). ![]() Statue of Patañjali, its traditional snake form indicating kundalini or an incarnation of Shesha ![]() ![]() ![]() People don’t become defensive because of what you’re saying they become defensive because of why they think you’re saying it. Let’s explore how you can create a safe environment, so you can talk with almost anyone about almost anything. But if you can create a sense of safety, you can prevent clam-ups and blow-ups and keep the dialogue open. It’s the age-old case of fight or flight. This is why we often resort to silence or verbal violence when faced with a Crucial Conversation. When stakes are high, emotions run strong, and opinions vary, we often feel threatened. And when conversations turn crucial, a sense of safety is the first thing to go. If people don’t feel safe to engage in dialogue, they won’t. ![]() ![]() ![]() Destiny anime.TOKYO - A Japanese court sentenced a man to death after finding him guilty of murder and other crimes Thursday for carrying out a shocking arson attack on an anime studio in Kyoto, Japan, that killed 36 people. But soon after, dark-colored meteorites followed, bringing with them fearsome monsters called D2. Years ago, light-colored meteorites fell to the planet and began to usher a new chapter for humanity. Majority of metals occur naturally in compounds, which we must remove them from. Some metals are so unreactive they occur largely uncombined with other elements, simple to obtain. ![]() ![]() I must say that this program was cutting edge not just for me at the time but for anyone who wanted to get into recording on a computer. The flexibility of the interface and the integration of the various tools guarantee that you’ll soon be dependant on Cool Edit Pro for all of your audio needs.Cool Edit Pro 2 was one of the first audio recording programs that where computer based that I started using I think back in 2001 or so. While the video aspects could be better, Cool Edit Pro’s core strength is audio editing and we can strongly recommend this product for that purpose. There’s still more to this app, including fine noise reduction tools that videographers will appreciate and excellent online resources (including, which you should check out even if you are not a Cool Edit Pro enthusiast). This of course, does not prevent you from using it to create a soundtrack, just that the video preview features are not ideal. So while it is definitely possible to use Cool Edit Pro to score a video, this is not one of the application’s strengths. All together, this processing took about 40 seconds for every minute of DV source video (in comparison, ACID 4.0 needs about three seconds to load the same file). When we imported a video file into the program, it needed to undergo quite a lot of processing before we could get to work. VideoĪlthough you can add video to your Cool Edit Pro projects, we discovered that you need a very fast machine for this to be usable. Another limitation we ran into was that we were unable to preview effects while adjusting them in the Multitrack View until we hit the Apply button. We did find that timeline playback was occasionally sluggish, with fractional delays between when we hit the spacebar and when playback commenced, on a 900MHz/128MB test machine that easily met the minimum system requirements. All of the standard features you’d expect are here, such as beat and key matching, and loops are easy enough to lay down and move about. While the loop creation tools are excellent, the loop-based composition aspects of Cool Edit are competent, but not spectacular. Effects can be applied to audio files in the audio editor and permanently saved or you can work non-destructively with effects at the track level back in the multi-track window, at your discretion. This is just one example of the integrated behavior that really makes Cool Edit Pro a joy to use. Once you have recorded your audio into a track, a quick double-click on the track immediately and seamlessly switches back to the edit view. Recording into a track is about as easy as clicking the Record button, although Windows and your audio card’s mixers can often make the initial configuration a bit of a headache. The mixer window is analogous to a real-world mixer board with each (stereo) track represented by a single slider. It does not have a numeric indication of how much over peak the sound is bouncing, which makes lowering the level a bit of a guessing game. We liked that the track controls could instantly be expanded (with a right-click) to reveal more advanced tools and options.Īlong the bottom of the interface is a project output level audio meter that identifies clipping problems. With the click of a button, the interface changes from the familiar audio editor to a full multi-track loop-based recording and composition studio. We particularly liked the well-executed Parametric EQ filter. reverb) that videographers need and found them to be easy to use, with many helpful presets to get the beginner started. We examined, in some detail, the more common dynamics (e.g. The quality of the effects was excellent. ![]() The 45 audio effects and filters range from subtle to garish, and are all applied in real time, thanks to today’s fast processors. The audio analysis tools are especially strong and we found an immediate real-world use for the Phase Analysis tool. The simple copying, cutting, pasting and trimming tools are more accurate (down to the sample) and easier to use than the audio tools commonly found in most video-centric editors. The audio editing tools by themselves are a powerful argument for considering adding Cool Edit to your editing suite. Cool Edit Pro’s popularity is justified: In terms of quality, ease of use and value, it is hard to beat the $69 price tag of Cool Edit Pro 2000, which is a feature-limited version of the comprehensive Cool Edit Pro 2.0 ($249) reviewed here. More than just an audio editor, the 2.0 version of Cool Edit Pro enters the loop-based music composition space, supports simple MIDI operations and can be used to score a video soundtrack as well. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() What’s the best music for a dungeon full of blood-sucking fiends?
